Brooklands enjoys Motor Sport again - Aston Martin Triumph!

It was fantastic to see last night on the BBC, the spiritual and original home of UK Motor Racing, The Brooklands Circuit in Weybridge, Surrey, stage motor racing again and break new motor racing world records!

It was also great to see the Aston Martin DB9 beat the Mercedes SLR!

Well OK, they were only toys, but you've got to admire how someone like Top Gear's James May managed to rally all those thousands of people to build the miles of track and get thoroughly involved in a fascinating TV programme.

May and helpers pieced together 20,000 sections of track over the original 2.75-mile (4.42km) circuit, which was closed in 1939, to set a world record.

His attempt was officially scrutinised by Guinness World Records and filmed as part of a new TV series May has made looking at how boys toys can be real boys toys!.

Brooklands opened on 17 June 1907 and closed at the outbreak of World War II in 1939, when the aerodrome was requisitioned by the government.
It had two banked sections nearly 30ft (9m) high and cost GBP150,000 to build.

Sadly much of the old track has now disappeared to be replaced by housing and industrial estates which has to be traversed. The track had to cross a river and busy roads to complete the circuit.

Once the track was finished, local residents and museum volunteers raced against a team of Scalextric Club members and enthusiasts and the locals were victorious in the DB9. Perhaps May's love of Aston Martin's Insured the locals were always going to win.....

James May Scalextric Track

So how come James May gets to make all these fantastic TV programmes about Cars, Booze, Boys Toys.......
